Tonkinese

The Tonkinese blends the best features of its ancestors into one beautiful, medium-sized cat that is remarkably dense and muscular .  Whether appearing in the coat pattern of its Burmese predecessor, with sparkling green-gold eyes. The pointed pattern of its Siamese ancestor, with slittering blue eyes, or the “mink” coat pattern which was the original Tonk pattern, with ist unique aqua eyes, the Tonkinese is an intelligent, gregarious cat with a sense of humor.  These cats are firmly convinced that humans were put on earth to love them;  these are the cats that know they belong.

Relatively new as a modern breed, having been re-established by Margaret Conway in Canada, This is the same breed depicted in “The Cat-Book Poems of Siam” during the Ayudha Period (1358-1767), and imported to England in the early 1800’s as the “Chocolate Siamese.”

In the US, Tonkinese and Burmese can trace their beginnings back to Wong Mau, a small walnut colored cat imported to California by Dr. Joseph Thompson in 1930.  Wong Mau was probably what we now call a Natural Mink.

Tonkinese presently come in four colors (Natural, Blue, Champagne, and Platinum) and three varieties of each of those colors (pointed, mink, and solid).  Lovnpaws Cattery is presently working on a Red/Cream variety which traces its roots back to two Tonkinese girls that were sold to Sonya Fischer in France.  She sent us back two grandchildren of the two girls that we sent to her (a blue/cream tortie point and a natural tortie point).  From these two girls we have gotten reds, creams, and a variety of torties.  They cannot yet be shown in CFA, the registry which we are a part of, but the colors are just amazing.  You will be seeing more of these Red Kids in the future.

The colorful personality of the Tonkinese make them ideal companions.  They will be in your lap, on your shoulder, and sitting in the middle of the Sunday paper.  They are extremely intelligent and precocious, and love to play fetch with their humans, as well as greet visitors at the door.  Their affectionate ways are impossible to ignore.  This is not the cat to own if you want a pretty kitty sitting around and being quiet!  They are interactive, puppy like in their devotion, and we swear they have monkey toes!
